Berkelium is the 97th element in the periodic table and it is one of the actinides. The most used version of berkelium is berkelium-248 which has a 330 day half-life. Just like many other actinides it is one of the rarest elements in the periodic table. It is said that only 1 gram of berkelium is found naturally on earth. Berkelium is artificially produced, by bombarding americium-241 with alpha particles. Berkelium was discovered in 1949 by Thompson, Albert Ghiorso, and Glenn Seaborg. It was the 5 element synthesized from the transuranium elements. Berkelium got it's name from the place of where it was discovered, city of Berkeley, California.
