Holmium is the 67th element in the periodic table and it is in the lanthanide series. Holmium is a rare-earth element. It can be highly toxic and dangerous. This element is used for special magnetic purposes and used in alloys to make magnets. Holmium is never found freely in nature and is found in ores and minerals in the ground. It is found in gadolinite, monazite and other ores which also contain small amounts of rare-earth elements. Holmium can be mined in Inner Mongolia in China where most of it is mined and exported. Holmium was discovered by Swedish chemist Per Theodor Cleve in 1878. The element's name comes from Holmia, the Latin word for the city of Stockholm.
