Ruthenium is the 44th element in the periodic table and it is a transition metal. This element is quite stable. Like many others in the platinum group, ruthenium is rare. It is found only 0.0004 parts per million in the earth's crust. Ruthenium is used often in solar cells, it turns light energy into electrical energy. This element is mostly found in the Ural Mountains and in North and South America. The ruthenium ore is optained as a by product of nickel mining. In 1844, ruthenium was discovered by Karl Karlovich Klaus. The word ruthenium is derived from Ruthenia, which in Latin is Russia.
