Nickel is the 28th element in the periodic table and it is part of the transition metals. It is a silvery-white shiny metal with a slight golden color. It is hard and ductile. This metal is the fifth most common element on earth. Nickel is found in ores and minerals such as pentlandite [(Ni,Fe)9S8] and limonite [(Fe,Ni)O(OH)]. Most of the nickel is mined in Ontario, Canada. Fun fact: Nickel and iron are both found in astroids. Many think that due to a meteor shower, the mines in Canada have so much nickel. Nickel is often used to make steel and other strong alloys. It is also used in lithium-ion batteries, these batteries are very important in the future. Nickel was discovered by a swedish chemist, Baron Axel Fredrik Cronstedt, in 1751.
