Iron is the 26th element in the periodic table and it is part of the transition metals. It is a very abundant chemical element. It is the 4th most abundant (by mass) in the earths crust. Iron is found in an ore under the ground called hematite (Fe2O3), it is the most common iron containing ore. This element is can be found in all kinds of different ores as well, such as magnetite and taconite. Iron is the first element in group 8 on the periodic table. It is an enigma so it rusts easily. Nevertheless, iron is one of the cheapest metals so it is used very often. Most of the steel or refined metal used in our life is 90% iron. The reason iron has the symbol Fe is because of the latin word ferrum for firmness. Iron was not discovered by one singular person but was found by the egyptians which used iron back in 3500 BC.
