Manganese is the 25th element in the periodic table and it is part of the transition metals. It is a silvery white, hard, and brittle metal. This element is the first element in group 7. It is very abundant under the ground in the earth's crust. Manganese is found in ores such as pyrolusite (manganese dioxide) and rhodochrosite (manganese carbonate) which is most commonly found. The manganese mines are located in places such as China, and Africa, but more commonly, Australia and Gabon. Manganese dioxide is mostly extracted by reducing the oxide by using aluminium powder. When manganese oxide is heated with the powder, maganese metal is formed. It was discovered in 1774 by the Swedish chemist, Carl Wilhelm Scheele.
