Scandium

Scandium is a the 21st element in the periodic table and it is the first transition metal. It has is a silvery-white, metallic, soft and light metal. But, it costs a lot, over $270 per gram. It is expensive because it has been classified as a rare element together with yttrium and the lanthanoids. It is found in the earth's crust in a few rare ores. Scandium is used in metalic products and is bonded often with aluminium to make aerospace components. It's also sometimes found in sports equipment such as bicycle frames, baseball bats, and fishing rods. Although, scandium is mostly too expensive to be used for these things. The person that discovered this element is Lars Fredrik Nilson from Sweden in 1879. Nilson named scandium after his homeland, derived from the Latin word "Scandia" which means "Scandinavia".
