Oganesson
Atomic Number: 118
Oganesson is the last known element and it is predicted to be a noble gas. It is expected to be a gas at room temperature. Though, many think that this element might not be a noble gas due to it being radioactive, but we don't know enough about this element. Only a few atoms of oganesson have ever been made, so there is not biological or practical use for it other than research. It is definately not the last element in the periodic table, but it is hard to make element-119. This is because element-119 starts a new row on the periodic table and people expect that having such a big atom, the machines won't be able to handel or make such an element. Oganesson doesn't occur naturally so that means it has to be made in a lab. There is only one isotope of oganesson (oganesson-294), it has a half-life of 700 microseconds. To make this element you need a cyclotron, by fusion calcium-48 at a californium-249 target. This creates one atom of oganesson and three extra neutrons. Oganesson was discovered by Russian scientists at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna, Russia. It was named after Yuri Oganessian because he led a team that discovered many very heavy elements including this one. This element was discovered in 2006. |
