Meitnerium

Meitnerium is the 109th element in the periodic table and it is part of the transuranium group. This is because there is not much known about this element. Though, it is predicted that it might be part of the transition metals. There are 15 isotopes of meitnerium and every isotope is extremely radioactive. The most stable known isotope is meitnerium-278, has a half-life of 4.5 seconds. It decays into bohrium-274 through alpha decay (the release of alpha particles). There is an unconfirmed isotope, meitnerium-282 which may have a longer half-life of 67 seconds. There is no uses for this element other than research. Meitnerium is produced artificially. It can be made by bombarding atoms of bismuth-209 with ions of iron-58 using a particle accelerator. It was first discovered using this method by Peter Armbruster and Gottfried Münzenberg in 1982. Meitnerium is named for the Austrian physicist Lise Meitner. |
