Seaborgium

Seaborgium is the 106th element in the periodic table and it is the third transition metal in row 7. This element is predicted to be solid at room temperature and doesn't have a know appearence. It is predicted that it might look like a silvery white or metallic gray colour. There is no use for seaborgium outside of research due to only a few atoms of it have ever been made. This element like many other elements which are super heavy elements are radioative and toxic. The most stable isotope, seaborgium-271 has a half life of 2.4 minutes. This element is an artificial element which means it is not found naturally and needs to be made in a particle accelerator. You can create seaborgium by bombarding atoms of californium-249 with ions of oxygen-18. It was at first discovered by doing this process using a machine called the the Super-Heavy Ion Linear Accelerator. It was discovered by a team of scientists led by Albert Ghiorso working at the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory in Berkeley, California, in 1974. The element is named after the American nuclear chemist Glenn T. Seaborg. If you have read about some of the actinides or transuranium elements you might have noticed many of them were discovered by Glenn T. Seaborg. He received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1951. |
