Rutherfordium is the 104th element in the periodic table and it is the first transition metal in row 7. Rutherfordium doesn't have a know appearence, it is expected to have a silvery white or grey type of color. It also doesn't have any use other than research. Rutherfordium is radioactive just like many of the other elements with such a high atomic number. This element is an artificial element which means it isn't found in nature and needs to be made. Rutherfordium can be made by bombarding plutonium-242 with accelerated neon ions or by bombarding californium-249 with accelerated carbon ions. These two processes are made in particle accelerators and create an extremely tiny amount of rutherfordium. Rutherfordium was first synthesized in 1964 by a team of scientists in Dubna, Russia, led by Georgy Flerov. This element is named in honour of New Zealand Chemist, Ernest Rutherford, one of the first to explain the structure of atoms.
